MBP’s Southgate Interchange Project Named a Roads & Bridges Top 10 Roads of 2019

MBP’s Southgate Interchange project with the Virginia Department of Transportation was named the #8 road project of the Top 10 Roads of 2019 by Roads & Bridges.

The Southgate Interchange project enhanced the roadway network surrounding Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, by delivering a new gateway that significantly improved traffic flow and safety on Route 460 entering Virginia Tech’s campus. The existing signalized intersection at the U.S. Route 460 Bypass and Southgate Drive was replaced with a diverging diamond interchange and Southgate Drive was realigned to connect to the new interchange. When it was opened, the diverging diamond interchange on the Route 460 Southgate Connector project was the fourth of its kind in Virginia and only the second in the western portion of the state. MBP provided construction engineering and inspection services for this $38.6 million project.

“It’s an honor for the Southgate Interchange project to be named a Top Road of 2019 by Roads & Bridges,” said Josh Lawrence, PE, CCM, Service Executive at MBP and Project Manager on the Southgate Interchange project. “This recognition testifies to the quality of work and value our team brought to VDOT and stakeholders like Virginia Tech in delivering this challenging project.”

Roads & Bridges’ Top 10 Roads awards, created in 2000, recognize the top projects in North America. Each year, nominations are submitted to the Roads & Bridges editorial staff, which determines the Top 10 list based on project challenges, impact to the region, and scope of work.
