High Rise Bridge Project

MBP is providing comprehensive project management services for the High-Rise Bridge project in Chesapeake, Virginia. Our role includes managing design, permitting, right-of-way acquisition, scheduling, budget oversight, construction quality assurance, contract administration, financial management, and project controls. MBP also successfully implemented VDOT’s revised CADAC documentation management system to enhance project communication and document control.

This major VDOT design-build project involves widening nine miles of I-64 from four to six lanes and constructing a new 100-foot-tall fixed-span High-Rise Bridge over the Elizabeth River. The project scope includes six interstate bridge widenings, replacing the Great Bridge Boulevard Bridge over I-64, reconstructing portions of the existing High-Rise Bridge, and incorporating advanced traffic control, automated tolling, and intelligent transportation systems. It also involves significant right-of-way acquisition, utility relocations, environmental compliance, and public outreach efforts.

The project requires close coordination with multiple agencies, including the railroads, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Department of Environmental Quality, and Virginia Marine Resources Commission. As one of VDOT’s largest design-build initiatives, the High-Rise Bridge project is a critical infrastructure improvement for the region, aimed at improving traffic flow and supporting hurricane evacuation efforts.
