Hawaii Airport Extension

Honolulu, HI

MBP assisted with the facilitation of a value engineering workshop on the expansion of the Honolulu Airport (HNL) to provide a new Interisland Terminal in Honolulu, Hawaii. The New Day Work Program (NDWP), Inter-Island Terminal (IIT), Mauka Extension project is part of a larger Honolulu International Airport, Terminal Modernization Program and involved the construction of an approximately 280,000-square-foot, two-story building that will connect to the existing IIT.  The Mauka Extension was designed to be LEED Silver certified and provide a new concourse capable of accommodating six Group V (wide-body) aircraft gates and alternately, up to 11 Group III (narrow body) aircraft gates.

The workshop identified approximately 80 value improvement ideas during the creative phase of the study.  After these ideas were evaluated based on subjective criteria for project improvement, 25 of these were determined to enhance the value of the project and were developed as formal proposals.  The 25 proposals are estimated to have cost impacts with a total potential savings of approximately $29,641,000, or 13.4% of the project’s construction cost.
