University of Virginia, Gilmer Hall and Chemistry Building Renovation

Charlottesville, VA

MBP provided comprehensive commissioning services for the renovation of Gilmer Hall, supporting the project through the design, construction, acceptance, and occupancy phases. Commissioned systems included HVAC (hydronic pumps, air handling units, variable air volume terminal units, lab air valves, chilled beams, computer room air conditioning units, Konvekta energy recovery system, fan coil units, fume hoods, lab exhaust fans, and DDC control systems), electrical systems (emergency generator, lighting and daylighting controls), plumbing systems (domestic water heater/pumps), utility metering, and limited building envelope components (windows, plaza, roof, and skylights).

The project involved the 222,000-square-foot renovation of Gilmer Hall, home to instructional and research laboratories for the Departments of Biology and Psychology, as well as classrooms and lecture halls. The project achieved LEED Gold certification.

Throughout the project, MBP identified and tracked more than 435 design, installation, testing, and system performance issues. By addressing these issues early, MBP helped improve energy efficiency, enhance indoor environmental quality, and ensure occupant comfort. MBP also collaborated closely with the Owner and contractors to phase construction activities, allowing the building to remain operational during renovations.
