MBP was engaged by UMBC to provide project management services after construction on the new Event Center had been underway for a year. The complex project faced numerous challenges, including a high groundwater table, poor soils, phased construction packages, design changes, delayed AV/IT coordination, key personnel turnover, evolving code requirements, and late involvement from facility management—all while maintaining operations on an active campus.

The 172,000-square-foot, 5,000-seat multi-purpose Event Center serves as home to UMBC’s NCAA Retriever basketball and volleyball teams and hosts commencements, concerts, and community events. The facility includes athletic department offices, locker rooms, a media room, a command center, and amenities like training, conditioning, and academic support spaces for athletes.

MBP acted as the owner’s representative, providing comprehensive construction management and quality oversight. Our role included rigorous project controls, schedule and budget management, CMAR contract support, and oversight of contingency and scope alignment, ensuring the project’s successful completion despite its complexities.
