Hampton Roads Sanitation District, Norfolk South Trunk Force Main
Norfolk, VA
MBP provided full-time, on-site inspection services for two force main replacement projects, along with constructability reviews and cost-estimating support. The project involved replacing approximately 14,000 linear feet of aging force mains in downtown Norfolk, primarily along Colley Avenue and adjacent streets, to reduce the risk of sewer system failures in these neighborhoods.
The scope included the installation of 5,000 linear feet of 48-inch ductile iron force main, 7,300 linear feet of 42-inch ductile iron force main, and 1,700 linear feet of 16-inch ductile iron force main. These critical pipelines serve southern Norfolk, including downtown, as well as portions of northern Chesapeake and, at times, parts of Virginia Beach from the Military Highway corridor. Pipe installation methods included open trench excavation, boring, and tunneling to navigate the urban environment and minimize disruptions.
