CarolinaEast Medical Center, Women’s Center and Emergency Department Expansion
New Bern, NC
Project Detail:
Market:
MBP provided commissioning services throughout the design, construction, acceptance, and occupancy phases of this multi-phase expansion and renovation project. Our scope included developing the commissioning plan and specifications, conducting design and submittal reviews, creating pre-functional checklists, performing site observations and issue tracking, leading commissioning team meetings, verifying TAB, conducting functional performance testing, and completing ten-month warranty visits. We also subcontracted Stafford Consulting Engineers to provide Building Envelope Commissioning services, including design reviews, WUFI analysis, and BECx specifications and submittal reviews. The project involved building a new 38,000-square-foot tower and renovating 72,000 square feet of interior space across three phases. The expansion included a new women’s and children’s health pavilion, advanced operating suites, and upgrades to the post-operative care, pediatric care, clinical laboratory, and emergency department—all completed while the hospital remained fully operational.
During an early construction phase, MBP identified multiple VAV terminal units with blocked access to doors and control panels. We coordinated with contractors to relocate piping, conduit, and Unistrut supports to allow proper access for maintenance and repair. This proactive solution prevented future delays and contributed to a more maintainable, sustainable facility.
