Q&A with Ian
-
What inspired you to pursue a career in construction management?
I knew since I was young that I would pursue a career in some type of engineering. Construction management stuck out to me as it is a hands-on experience where there are always new things to learn and experience with lots of room to grow.

How has MBP supported your career growth or professional development?
They have helped in two major ways. The first is providing guidance on which certifications and areas of professional development would be the most beneficial for my career. The second is to help finance these certifications by paying for exams and study materials.
-
What advice would you give to someone starting a career in this industry?
I would say to learn as much as you can early on, but more importantly, give yourself time to adjust to the new role. Starting a career in construction is a big change for anyone, whether you are fresh out of college or have previously worked in a different field. So just give yourself some time to get used to it.

What is some advice you’d give to your 20-year-old self?
I don’t have too many years between me and my 20-year-old self, but I would tell him to put himself out there, try new things, get out of his comfort zone, and enjoy the present moment.
-
Favorite MBP tradition or event?
My favorite event is the Annual Business Meeting (ABM). It’s nice to get away to a new location for a weekend, meet new people at the company, enjoy the events that the company puts on, and even see familiar faces from work in a more casual and laid-back environment.

If you could swap jobs with someone at MBP for a day, who would it be and why?
I would shoot for the top and swap jobs with Chris Payne (CEO). Hopefully, I would not bring the company down in that day, but it would be interesting to see how the top dogs operate in their day-to-day.
