What’s your role at MBP, and what does a typical day look like?
My current position at MBP is a Service Line Manager on our Facility Performance team. Although I still lead and execute select projects myself, I see my primary role as that of empowering my team to execute projects and provide value to our clients. By supporting project execution and streamlining internal coordination, I help the team focus on delivering results. I also try to stay familiar with all our projects so I can “come off the bench” and fill in during time crunches or if someone is not available. Finally, most of my career was spent as a building automation systems contractor. I offer that experience to my team members, serving as a technical resource and a mentor for dealing with complex building systems.

What do you enjoy most about working at MBP?
By far the best part of working at MBP is the people. I have been with MBP for 17 years and have always been very impressed by the professionalism, expertise, and dedication I encounter within the company. MBP is a true team, with everyone pulling in the same direction to achieve success. But I also enjoyed the variety of projects I have seen. I have been involved with projects ranging from the commissioning of North Carolina interstate highway lighting systems to a large data center in Salt Lake City, UT, to hospital evaluations in Long Island, NY, and everything in between.

What advice would you give to someone starting a career in this industry?
I give this advice every time I talk to a young person: The construction industry is the land of opportunity. If you are willing to work hard, do a good job, and take every opportunity to learn, there is virtually no limit to how far you can advance.

If you weren’t in your current job, what would you be doing?
If I weren’t in my current job, I would be retired and sitting on the porch in a rocking chair.

What is your favorite way to unwind after a busy week?
In August, I started a 75-gallon planted freshwater aquarium. It now has a total of around 50 fish and shrimp in it and nine different species. I like to spend part of every weekend working on it. Maintaining a large aquarium is part art and part science. There is an art to arranging the live plants for aesthetics and providing an enriching environment for the inhabitants. And careful attention must be paid to the science of maintaining optimal water chemistry to give them their best lives.

Favorite sports team?
My sister and I are big Carolina Panthers fans and attend most home games. We even sat through all the games during the 2001 season when they won their first game and then lose 15 in a row. It doesn’t get much worse than that.
