National Park Service Selects MBP to Provide Construction Liaison Services
MBP to Provide Services for the Washington Monument Earthquake Repairs
Columbia, Maryland - MBP is pleased to announce the firm has been selected by the National Park Service (NPS) to provide construction liaison services for the Washington Monument Earthquake Repairs project.
"We are thrilled to be working with NPS to repair this historic, national landmark to a fully operational state," says Robert Carter, CCM, MBP Project Manager. "As always, we take pride in the services we provide, but we recognize that with this project, we are restoring a national icon."
The one-year-long project involves exterior and interior repairs to the Washington Monument, a stone masonry obelisk with a total height of 555 feet and 5-1⁄8 inches, which was damaged by an earthquake. The Monument is structurally stable, but sustained significant cracking and other interior and exterior damage in the upper portions and also suffered from significant water intrusion into the interior portions of the building.
MBP will provide on-site coordination, administrative oversight, and construction management support to the park management and project team for the duration of the project. The firm will serve as an on-site point-of-contact to park management as needed and will provide coordination assistance.
All work performed on-site will be executed with the utmost care to ensure the respect and preservation of natural and cultural resources and to minimize disruption of on-going NPS operations and facility maintenance activities within the park.
"We understand the importance of the project and will work hard to preserve the historical integrity of this national treasure," says Carter.
The Washington Monument was damaged by a magnitude 5.8 earthquake, with an epicenter near Mineral, Virginia, on August 23, 2011. The earthquake caused significant damage to the Monument, and as a result it was immediately closed indefinitely until the building is repaired.
