GRTC Transit System Selects MBP for Compressed Natural Gas Conversion Project

Richmond, Virginia - MBP is pleased to announce that the firm has been selected as part of a team to provide construction management services for GRTC Transit System. MBP will be helping GRTC to convert their Operations and Maintenance Facility to compressed natural gas (CNG).

The GRTC Operations and Maintenance Facility, is primarily used for servicing GRTC's fleet of 186 buses. The facility currently supports the fleet's diesel operations, but as the fleet converts to CNG, so must the maintenance facility. The GRTC's decision to convert to CNG reflects a growing trend in the U.S. transportation market today. Despite higher short-term costs, drivers and transit owners alike both see CNG as a better alternative to diesel in the long-run and the growing number of available pumps are making CNG more attractive.

MBP will be providing construction management services on this project including Commissioning, CPM scheduling, cost estimating, construction management and inspection. The MBP team will be assisting the GRTC Transit System from design and procurement through the final closeout phase.

"We are pleased to be selected as part of the team assisting the GRTC transit facility's efforts to convert to CNG," says Don C. Young, PE, CCM, Vice President and Regional Operations Manager. "This is an exciting and forward looking project and reflects our expertise in both transit and alternative energy market sectors."

Throughout the term of the project, the GRTC facility must remain fully operational, as it is also the site of the GRTC's administration offices. The project will also be built in close coordination with the City of Richmond's Department of Public Utilities.
